Twenty Years of the
Hungarian Asylum System
In 2009, the Hungarian Office for Immigration and Nationality has celebrated the 20th anniversary of its establishment. On 19 November, successes of the two decades were celebrated, challenges remembered and complexities of present problems were reflected upon at a ceremony convening representatives of authorities, international organisations, humanitarian NGOs and staff representatives of the Office of Immigration and Nationality.
At the occasion, Gottfried Koefner, UNHCR Regional Representative for Central Europe gave a specific UNHCR perspective of the developments during the past twenty years, as well as of the present day dilemmas.
